Windows and doors in a Beveridge rental
Latches, locks and windows that open are three of the 15 Victorian rental standards. A window that sticks shut or a door that will not latch fails before the first tenant moves in.
In short: Before you list a Beveridge rental, every external window must latch, the main entry needs a working deadlatch and every external door must lock. Older homes fail here more than anywhere.
What the standards ask
A functioning deadlatch on the main entry, other external doors lockable with a key, and external windows that can be closed and latched.
What fails
Windows that will not open or close, damaged trims and doors that stick or no longer latch, often after some settlement.
How we check
Each lock and latch is operated by hand, room by room, and photographed.
Fixing it
Most fixes are adjustments or hardware replacements that a carpenter or locksmith can do in a day.
